As a berth holder, you are responsible for ensuring your vessel is secured with mooring lines that are of adequate size and strength and are maintained in good condition. Substandard lines endanger both your vessel and others.

Size of Mooring Lines
We suggest that you observe the following recommended sizes:

Size of Vessel
4m – 6m
6m – 9m
9m – 12m
12m – 15m
Over 15m

Recommended Line Size
10mm
12mm
12 –16mm
16 – 24mm
24mm Minimum

Types of Mooring Lines
There are a variety of types of rope used for mooring lines – not all of which are suited to the task because they lack the durability required.
   NYLON
- very strong with excellent shock absorbing qualities
- stretches easily, therefore not suitable where the limits of the berth are tight
POLYPROPYLENE e.g. Proplon
- good abrasive qualities but deteriorates quickly in sunlight
- not suitable for mooring lines unless prepared to renew regularly
POLYESTER e.g. Dacron, Tetron, Terylene
- has little stretch, an excellent all round rope, very suitable for mooring lines
POLYETHTLENE FIBRE e.g. Donlene
- good strength, excellent abrasive qualities

Overall, we recommend the use of Polyethylene Fibre as it is considerably less expensive than
the other synthetics and offers excellent strength.
